Recon/Map is the first member of a family of intelligent tools designedto aid network managers in identifying and solving problems with theirnetworks. Recon/Map maps TCP/IP networks and notifies the networkmanager when there is an inconsistency that could cause a problem. Forinstance, Recon/Map detects unknown hardware addresses, unlisted IPaddresses, two hardware addresses with the same IP address, and two IPaddresses being used by the same hardware address.In addition, Recon/Map can write to a file the IP-to-Ethernet addressmappings it has collected form the network for analysis or use by otherprograms or people. Recon/Map has been designed to catch over 90% ofcommon TCP/IP problems, and is intended to complement existing networkmonitoring and management products.
